The ‘Fen’ Hats were created last summer. Each hat takes inspiration from traditional fisherman’s hats. They are all sewn in my studio in Gloucestershire.

Made from a dry oilskin which is manufactured in the UK. This type of oilskin is water resistant, so the water doesn’t completely run off it, but it shouldn’t come through to the other side. The finish is dry and crisp with a matte appearance.

* Named after the Fen: this is a broad expanse of nutrient-rich shallow water in which dead plants do not fully decay, resulting in a flora of emergent plants growing in saturated peat.

”The Fens were once mostly water. In the ninth century, a Viking fleet could still sail as far inland as Ely. Until well into the 1600s, much of the Fens was a network of brackish swamps and reed beds, interspersed with islands and causeways of raised but marshy ground. The human inhabitants of this world were amphibious: travelling in punts, living in houses raised on stilts and surviving by fishing, cutting willow, reeds and peat and geese-keeping .” Robert Macfarlane
